EssentialYoga Studio Welcomes Susan Elena Esquivel

Back Care and Scoliosis Workshops
with Susan Elena Esquivel

Saturday, April 6th, 2019

Session I: 10:00am - 12:00pm - Iyengar Yoga for Back Care - Upper Body Focus
The shoulder joint includes more muscles than any other part of the body. As a result, the muscles of the neck and shoulders tend to be an area where many people experience tightness or hold tension. Using Iyengar yoga to align the spine, participants first learn how to release muscles and then learn how to develop concavity in the thoracic spine while lengthening the cervical spine. This will create space, increase awareness and relieve pain. Participants will leave with an understanding of common misalignments of posture, how they contribute to tightness or discomfort in the upper body and learn basic poses to release tension and relax muscles of the neck/shoulders. No previous yoga experience necessary.

Cost:    $40.00

Session II: 2:00pm - 5:00pm - Iyengar Yoga for Back Care  and Scoliosis
This session will focus on the back care principles of lengthening and strengthening the core and spinal muscles. Participants will learn how combining yoga postures with breath awareness can help one develop a more symmetrical alignment. A discussion of the different types of curves will aid participants in modifying to support their body’s specific needs. This is accomplished by stretching muscles that have tightened and strengthening muscles that have become weak from an asymmetrical imbalance. Using the principles of Iyengar yoga, one can find a balance point that allows the scoliosis curve, or other spinal imbalances, to coexist with gravity, activating the body’s natural plumb line. The result for most people with scoliosis or other back care concerns is better posture, freer breathing and less pain. No previous experience necessary, all levels welcome.

Cost:    $60.00

Both workshops:    $90.00

These workshops are open to teachers who wish to learn more about addressing these issues with their students.
